「貧者の眼」は１９世紀のシャルル・ボードレールによる散文詩、“Les Yeux des Pauvres” に基づく。“Les Yeux des Pauvres” で、ボードレールはパリの社会情勢の変化の中にも時代を超え存在する複雑な対人関係の像を表現している。「貧困者の眼」を通して、ボードレールの詩は現在のサンフランシスコに共鳴するものを見いだす。
